The Hero’s Journey of Gsus Lopez

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love working with other people, the collaboration process is always fascinating in all ascpects and areas of filmmaking. I especially enjoy it when a sort of creative family is born during shooting. We spend so many hours together that by the end of it we have become great friends.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? I don’t believe there’s such a thing as ‘perfect happiness’, I think happiness comes and goes and it’s more of journey. I am definitly a more happy person since I found my place in the world. Knowing who you are and what you want to do already puts you in a good state of mind with yourself and others’.
What is my greatest fear? Death (not mine so much, but that of the people I love).
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Stubbornness.
What is my greatest extravagance? Taking a cab to the airport if my flight is really early.
On what occasion would I lie? If the truth would hurt someboy I love and the fact they’d know it wouldn’t change anything.
What is the influence of role models, in my work and in my life? My role models are people who come from very humble backgrounds and tought, encourged and reinvented themselves to be the person they’d always dreamed of being even if for years and years they felt like misfits. I think of them on my daily life and every project I do or stuation I find myself in.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The lack of experience, I have so much to learn…
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I did the cast and crew screening of my short film ‘OUT’ at the Odeon in Leicester Sq. I felt that I had achieved something very especial, even though I was being vulnerable in front of everybody by telling such a personal story. But that’s the feeling I want to go back to with every film I do in the future.
If I could, what would I change about myself? Not sure, I wouldn’t be myself if I changed the slightest.
What is my greatest achievement in work? It’s still yet to come, when I start my feature film adventure which I’m already writing… Only time will tell.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The British Film Institute in Southbank (London).
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?  The Bonneville Tavern on 43 Lower Clapton Road (East London), both the food and the cocktails are so good!
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My husband Víctor. He’s the one who’s always there for me for the good and bad times. He listens to my crazy ideas from the very beginning, he is the first person to read my scripts and give me honest feedback and also works on and / or supervises the postproduction process.
Whom would I like to work with in the future? With so many people… I’d love to do a music video for Lana del Rey, a fashion film for Gareth Pugh o Jean Paul Gaultier, I would love to work with actress Rossy de Palma too.
What project, in the nearby future, am I am looking forward to work on? Two projects: a little film I want to do in LA with ballet dancer Evan McKie that we are hoping to shoot this year at some point when we find the right parnter in crime (commissioners if you are reading this, get in touch!); and a dark comedy short titled ‘NEIGHBOURS’ that I’m working on with producer Georgia Tomi, we are in the financing process but the script is ready to go and I’ve got most of the crew attached already.
