The Hero’s Journey of Hernán Cabrera

What is the best thing that I love about my work?
They are a couple of things. On the one hand, the possibility of working with wonderful artists. On the other hand, being able to be part of the creation of artistic works that, hopefully, will be enjoyed by people.
Also the possibility of having constant challenges that force me to continue learning and improving.
What is my idea of happiness?
For me, happiness are moments. Moments with family, moments with friends, moments of love, moments of enjoyment. These are the moments when we forget about the bad things in life and only enjoy the present.
What is my greatest fear?
The suffering of people, especially the one I love. Nothing takes my sleep away more than thinking that there are people suffering at this very moment, or that people I love may end up suffering in some way.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
I think there are two things: on the one hand my insecurity. I have a hard time making decisions and many times I doubt myself. That is often reflected in my work, in which sometimes I do not dare to go further. I am constantly trying to overcome that (and I am succeeding). And the other, related to the previous one, is my shyness. I am very shy and that often works against me.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
Many! Various comic book colorists from whom I learn a lot: Marte Gracia, Laura Martin, Alejandro Sánchez, Paul Mounts, Jordie Bellaire, Kurt Michael Russell, and many others. And then many artists: Alex Ross, Jorge Jimenez, Carlos Pacheco, Mariano Navarro, and many more.
What is my greatest extravagance?
I don’t think I have any
I am a fairly basic and flat person 😛
On what occasion would I lie?
In a life and death situation I would do it without hesitation. And I think I would also do it if it serves to save someone from suffering.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
When I can’t get out of my head and go further. Sometimes I think my work is a bit halfway there. For some time I have been working hard to remedy that … and I think I am succeeding.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
Now that I’m working with the great people at Aftershock Comics. And also every time I read a favorable review of my work (which, luckily, happens very often)
If I could, what would I change about myself?
I would make myself braver and gave me great drawing skills (which I don’t have).
And I would be equal to Brad Pitt, of course: P
What is my greatest achievement in work?
Having colored comics written by Alan Moore (“God is dead”), whom I greatly admire.
Where would I most like to live?
I would like to spend my life living a couple of years in each place. Some time in Japan, then New York, then Holland, Sweden, Chile, Germany, London, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other places.
What is my most treasured possession?
A great Iron Giant action figure that I bought a few years ago. It speaks, it has lights in its eyes, accessories, a symbol that sticks with a magnet and many other things. I love it.
What is my most marked characteristic?
I am very detailed and obsessive. Sometimes it is a good thing, and sometimes not, but I think it is something very useful for my work.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
My city (Buenos Aires) is very beautiful and has hundreds of amazing places. I especially enjoy the places that have stood the passing of time and retain their old style. And I also really enjoy its green spaces, its parks and squares.
But the one that I enjoy the most and inspires me is my own apartment and my balcony.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
I am not someone very nocturnal. I enjoy breakfast, snacks and especially brunch much more.
I love the little cafes where I can enjoy a quiet snack while reading.
What books influenced my life and how?
One of the first was Scott McCloud’s “Understanding comics”. Then many comics, such as “Sandman”, “V of Vendetta”, “Watchmen”, and many others that made me love this profession.
And outside the comic, books such as “Chronicles of the Gray Angel” by Alejandro Dolina, the works of Jorge Luis Borges, and Ernesto Sábato, the science fiction of Ray Bradbury, Clarke, Asimov, Dick, the terror of Stephen King and many many more.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?
“Primer Corte” by Coiffeur, an album that marked me in a very special moment of my life, of many changes, transitions and acceptance.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?
As a child, my favorite was Spiderman. Then for a long time it was The Flash.
Now I don’t have one in particular. I think that every character is as good or bad as its creators. Everyone has a chance to be great.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?
People with ideals, and who give everything for them. Especially those whose ideals are not selfish, but seek to improve the lives of others.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” directed by Michel Gondry
What role plays art in my life and work?
Now it is almost everything. It is what occupies most of my time, whether as work or as enjoyment. It is what allows me to eat, pay the rent, and live in general. It is also what allows me to be focused on life, to have a purpose and what allows me to relax and distract myself in moments when everything else torments me.
What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me?
A half truth. While I agree that everyone has to do everything they can to make their own lives, it is impossible to deny that sometimes there are external elements that we cannot control and that are stronger than us. And also that external help is often necessary to continue moving forward. We are not isolated beings in space: we live surrounded by other people, other realities and situations that constantly cross us.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?
Luckily, I have several: my family, my friends, the people who love me.
Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020?
I would like to continue working with the wonderful people at Aftershock Comics, who treat me very well. I’d also like to work for Marvel or DC comics, which has been a dream of mine.
I would love to be able to color works by Jorge Jimenez, Carlos Pacheco, Olivier Coipel, Sara Pichelli, and many many others.
Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2020?
I would like to have contact with other professional colorists who can give me advice and suggestions to improve my work, such as Marte Gracia, Laura Martin, Alejandro Sánchez, Paul Mounts, Jordie Bellaire, Kurt Michael Russell.
What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on?
With the quarantine established by COVID19 I don’t know what will happen this year. I hope the “GodKillers” comic I’m coloring for Aftershock Comics keeps coming out. I am also working on “Von Bach”, another wonderful comic that I am coloring.
Where can you see me or my work in 2020?
This year you can see my work in “GodKillers”, the comic I’m coloring for Aftershock Comics. I am also working on “Von Bach”, another wonderful comic that I am coloring. I am also working on a Chilean comic called “Mirageman”, which tells the adventures of a cult vigilante from Chile. And I will also be working on the comic of an Argentine superhero named “Caballero Rojo” (“Red Knight”).
And surely many more things will emerge, which I will report on my social networks.
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?
I think it is totally true. I agree 100%.
Which creative heroes should Peter invite to tell their story?
All the colorists I mentioned earlier. I would be very interested to read them.
I would also like to invite Mariano Navarro (navarro@portalcomic.com), a great Argentine comic artist.
